A Spectacle of Speed

Trumbull County's 2007 public art event

The Spectacle of Speed public art exhibit is now complete. A total of $105,100 was generated through the sale of art to support arts and cultural organizations in Trumbull County! All 36 statues were sold. While several may be seen throughout the community, several have been purchased by private individuals and reside in their private collections. A list of locations has been added to the sponsors and artists list below.

The Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County would like to thank everyone who participated in this project in any way. We consider the project as a success in many ways. Over thirty artists were involved in creating public art for our community who responded in such a warm and welcoming manner. Members of our community, as well as visitors, toured Trumbull County to see and experience the goddesses. We brought attention to the arts as well as artists. We generated pride for our community and as the same time raised funds to support the work of four not-for-profit organizations. The funds generated through this project would not have found their way into our budgets in any other manner.

If you would like to purchase a keepsake from the Spectacle of Speed event you can visit Parkside Vintage, at 170 North Park Avenue in downtown Warren. There you can purchase posters, auction catalogs and postcards. Or if you are from out of town you can contact the Fine Arts Council at info@trumbullarts.org to inquire about mail orders.

On Saturday, August 18, WBBG-FM Big 106.1, took a bus tour of their loyal radio listeners on a tour of the goddesses of speed statues. To see photos from the tour click here.

Due to an EXTREME DELAY by the manufacturer of our fiberglass icons, Artists had until June 11, 2007 to complete their work. Upon completion participating artists received a stipend for their work. Any artist who completed their work early was able to return the completed statue prior to the June 11 deadline.

The Spectacle of Speed exhibit opened on Tuesday, June 26 at the Warren Community Amphitheatre. 35 statues were on display collectively from June 26 until June 30. After the July 4th holiday the Goddesses were displayed at various locations throughout Trumbull County. A driving tour map was made available on July 6, 2007. The Spectacle of Speed was on public display until Tuesday September 18, 2007.

On Saturday, October 27, 2007 the Goddess of Speed statues came together for the charity auction. This public auction generated revenue for local arts and cultural organizations and was held at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Avenue, Warren. A total of 25 statues were available for purchase through the auction. Organizations who benefitted:

•   Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County
•   National Packard Museum
•   Trumbull 100 Community Foundation
•   Trumbull Art Gallery’s Summerfest

Tonight Show host and car collector, Jay Leno designed a 36th Goddess that was added to our Spectacle of Speed exhibit. Mr. Leno created the design, had it executed by one of his studio artists, autographed the sculpture and returned it to Warren in time for the Packard Car Show, July 20 - 22, 2007. It was on display at the National Packard Museum, 1899 Mahoning Avenue, Warren from July 20 - September 18, 2007. The Fine Arts Council and our project partners were delighted and appreciative of Mr. Leno's participation.
