"Material
Culture" suitcase exhibit with quilts, toys, rugs, clothing, books
and art prints of the Amish people
Targeted
age group:
Cost
to reserve suitcase for one week:
This
unit introduces Amish culture as it is practiced in Trumbull County and
Northeastern Ohio.
The
unit is developed to be presented by the individual classroom teacher in one
to five lessons. It is suggested that schools choose the grade level where
the unit would best compliment their studies on community and/or Ohio
history, then annually use the unit at that grade level.
The
student text was written by Dr. Thomas Newcomb with fourteen original
illustrations by local artist, Edmund Collens. The teachers' resource manual
was also written by Dr. Newcomb.
The
exhibit brings the beauty and simplicity of Amish traditions to life and
presents an ideal basis for discussion of the similarity and uniqueness of
traditions practiced by the students and their families…as well as an
appreciation for traditions.
The
development of this unit was underwritten with grants from the Ohio Arts
Council, Ohio Humanities Council, Helen Hart Hulbert Foundation and Warren
Junior Crafts.

This
project documents the Civil War as it was reenacted by the 6th Ohio
Volunteer Cavalry in September 1993 in Mesopotamia, Ohio. A nearly perfect
cultural and military re-enactment took place with hundreds of military and
non-military re-enactors attending. While no actual Civil War battles took
place in Mesopotamia, the setting offers the feel of a real Civil War town.
This
video project was created from photographs taken by DeeAnna Culbertson and
the script was written by Dr. Thomas Newcomb. In addition, Dr. Newcomb has
prepared a resource information guide for use with the video.
Former
educator and local historian Wendell Lauth has gathered information about
the role Trumbull County played in the War. This resource guide contains
local history pertaining to the war as well as a Civil War Bibliography.
Funding
for this project was provided by Governor Galleries of Cortland, Ohio.

Utilize
this tool to help your students understand early life in the Western Reserve.
As
part of the Bicentennial Celebration held during 2000, a new suitcase was
created to allow students to explore life as it was in Trumbull County from 1799 to 1830. Funding for the pioneer contents was
provided by the Mahoning Valley Sports Charities, with donations from the
Workshops of Gerald E. Henn and the Trumbull County Historical Society.
A special Teacher Resource Guide has been printed to
accompany this Basket that contains over 30 lesson plans, written by
teachers from throughout Trumbull County. They will aid you in teaching
about this historical period. The teacher in-service that provided for the
creation of the lesson plans was offered by the Trumbull County Educational
Service Center.
